With 11/11/11 drawing ever closer, we thought it the perfect time to drop the latest PYC mix. eleven8 blends ethereal ambiences with toughened drum patterns and the kind of floor shaking, back to the origins basslines synonymous with the roots of dubstep.

We’re immensely proud to be hosting him in the PYC room on the 11th, so thought we’d catch up with the man and ask him to put together a showcase mix for us. If you weren’t already excited about what promises to be the best night this year, you will be after you hear this, click on the picture at the top for the DL.

Tell us a bit about yourself?
My names Edd, I’m 23 and I produce as eleven8! I live in the country, but I don’t drive a tractor.

What influenced you to start making music?
I’ve always been a musical person, I used to play drums in bands when I was younger so the idea of making music has been there for a while. I studied Music Tech in college and that was when I started to mess about using computers to make music. There’s a lot that influences me, listening to lots of music is always inspiring, not just electronic music but anything…I think if you listen to one genre for too long it just destroys creativeness!

What do you use to produce?
I’m running Logic 8 on an iMac with some Dynaudio speakers. Plugins wise, I use a lot of the Native Instruments stuff as well as a Virus TI. I’ll crack out Ableton now and again but the majority is all done in Logic!

You’re equally as comfortable making 140bpm as 170, where does your heart lie?

I’d have to say it’s 140! When I first started producing music at that speed it was all quite aggressive, but I got bored of that sound pretty quickly and started trying to make tracks which were darker but that had a more spacious mix. That was the stuff I listened too and loved but the production of it I couldn’t do at all!
I stopped with Dubstep and turned my attention to Drum & Bass where I learnt a lot of new techniques in terms of sound design and mixdowns – so at the start of the year when I came back to working on the 140 stuff it was like “yes I can finally make the sort of stuff I wanted to make originally!” I’ll work at 170 again sometime soon, but right now I’m comfortable here!

How did it feel to have Med School behind you? That’s a pretty big look!
Yeah, having a track signed to them was amazing, they’ve been such a big influence on me – I first got introduced to the deeper vibes at one of their Fabric nights in 09 – I remember seeing Icicle’s set and being so excited by every sound I was hearing, the Drum & Bass I’d heard up until that point was either Jump Up or cheesy Liquid stuff, so it really caught my attention. But everyone involved with Med School is really sound, it’s always great to see them etc, so shouts to Ash, Belinda, James Lung and Joe Syntax!

Where did the name come from?
Ah, back when I was making weird experimental electronica I used a lot of different time signatures, 3/4, 7/8, 9/8 and 11/8 – the latter being one of my favorites – so it came from there. I should write some stuff in it again really, it would be interesting to see how it would go on the dance floor…

You excited to be involved in 11/11/11?
Ahh, I can’t wait – every time I see something posted about that the excitement grows. Such a good lineup! It’s going to be great to see people again as well as meeting people who I chat to on a regular basis on the Internet, put names to faces and all that.

What would be a dream collaboration for you?
I’d love to do something with Eskmo, I thought his last album was great, as was Amon Tobin’s. The way those guys process folly samples is amazing!

What have you got coming up releases wise?
Release wise, I have a couple of 12”s forthcoming that are scheduled for next year. One of them is coming out on Indigo’s label Mindset. Similarly to Medschool, Mindset is a label I’ve been following for a long time and has had a big influence on the music I produce, so I’m hyped to be involved with them.
The 2nd is forthcoming on Solace Records – a new label that’s been set up by a guy named Solitude, who some people may know from his “Ambient Dubstep” mixes, and the co-owner of an Australian Drum & Bass label Silk Recordings. My 12” will be their second release – they have some great stuff coming up so keep an eye out for them!
There’s a few other things in the pipeline, but will post more info when it’s all confirmed!

Tell us a bit about what went into this mix?
It’s all around the 140 mark, some melodic bits as well as some darker things as well – I like to get a bit of a progression with my mixes, so it starts fairly mellow.
A lot of it is forthcoming / unsigned material from artists I’m really into – and there’s a few of my own newer bits in there as well.

Name some producers you’re feeling at the moment..
Clarity, Lung, June Miller, Synkro, Indigo, Kaiju, Biome, Versa, My Nu Leng, Rowl, Troy Gunner, Anex, Clubroot, Blu Mar Ten…there’s a lot of good music out there at the moment!

Name your three desert island discs..
Hmm…
Dubstep Allstars 06
Why – Eskimo Snow
The ‘Hot Rod’ soundtrack – there’s some classics on that
